Gipsie Jack
Langhorne Creek, South Australia
Gipsie Jack Wines is a partnership between two long time Australian winemaking families, the Glaetzer and Potts families. The wines are made by John Glaetzer and Ben Potts, with Ben’s father Bill Potts being the Viticulturalist for a lot of the fruit that the wines are made from.
Frank Potts established the Bleasdale Winery in 1850 which is still owned by the Potts family and is currently the second oldest family owned winery in Australia with only Yalumba being six months older.
The long partnership between the two families has its origins in the mid 1960’s when Wolf Blass was working as a consulting winemaker to Bleasdale Winery and was looking to start a winery of his own. One of the growers he bought his first grapes from was Ben’s great grandfather Henry ‘Fiddle’ Potts. Ben’s family still supply some very high quality fruit for Wolf Blass to this very day and are proud to be foundation growers. A couple of years after Wolf started Wolf Blass Wines (late 1960’s), John came to work for him as his winemaker.
John went on to have an outstanding career with Wolf Blass and is still Australia’s most awarded red winemaker. Through this association John and Bill Potts became very close friends and currently own a very good vineyard in Langhorne Creek together.
In the mid 2000’s, Bill & John decided to join forces. They begun making great value wines from the abundant fruit of the region and named the winery Gipsie Jack, in honour of another great mate, John’s beloved Jack Russell named Gipsie.
